KOTA KINABALU - New Zealander Nigel Harper has been appointed as chief executive officer of the Sutera Harbour Resort Group here. The appointment was announced recently by the Kota Kinabalu's Group president, Datuk Edward Ong.
An industry professional with more than 30 years of experience in handling strategic brand management services for various international hospitality companies, Harper first arrived in Asia in 1989 as the first appointed general manager of the Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur, the first hotel for Southern Pacific Hotels (SPHC) in Asia.
He returned to Australia as director of operations for Australia and Asia for SPHC, where he played a key role in the overall development and expansion plans for the Group with his final appointment as chief executive based in Indonesia.
In 1998, Harper joined ACCOR Asia Pacific and was instrumental in drawing up advanced plans for the ACCOR brand within Asia in his position as the director of Development - Asia.
He soon moved to New Zealand as director of operations and thereafter to South Korea where he was responsible for the development of their properties in the region.
Commenting on the announcement, Ong said: "It comes as we embark on our development plans in the hospitality industry. Further to establishing Sutera Harbour Resort as our core brand for comprehensive integrated lifestyle tourism, we have now added nature and adventure tourism with the North Borneo Railway and the five properties at Sutera Sanctuary Lodges (formerly the Kinabalu Nature Resorts)."
Ong added that with the new appointment, the Group hoped to create further opportunities to boost tourism growth in Sabah and look forward to working in close collaboration with the government, Sabah Tourism, Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines, other international airlines and our travel trade partners.
